Ayiti

Mon Cherie

When you first think of Haiti what comes to mind? Poverty, an unstable economy, the unstructured government are the few answers that many would respond. But these descriptions fail to truly portray the nation for what it really is, vibrant and rich.

The native people knew this land as the “Flower of high land”, those who conquered the island called it “The pearl of the Antilles”. All who stepped on its lands immediately recognized its beauty and the resiliency of its people. In 1804, It birthed the first independent, black nation & set the precedence for freedom from tyranny.

This project looks to reflect the beauty in a country that is often described in ugly ways. I wanted to showcase Haiti in a light that most people don’t often see, rich and vibrant. I looked to mimic the colors and style of traditional Haitian artists while adding elements of modern design into the mix. It is a combination of old and new, where contemporary Haitian art meets modern culture. Where resiliency and perseverance meet hope for a brighter tomorrow. These pieces show the beauty of Haiti that was widely recognized in the past still exists in its people of today.
